Ex-F1 Mechanic Alastair Gibson brings racing materials to fish sculptures. Wait, wha?

Alistair Gibson's sculptures from F1 car parts - Click above for a gallery of images

Alistair Gibson spent 22 years in Formula 1 paddocks as a mechanic with teams like Benetton and BAR Honda. With decades of carbon fiber and shiny bits swimming in his head, it probably shouldn't come as a complete surprise that after leaving pit lane he has begun fabricating motorsports-influenced sculptures of fish.

Lola considers 2010 F1 team entry

British racing car company Lola has announced it is contemplating a formula one foray for 2010.

"Lola has appointed key new staff to the project and allocated some of its top engineers to this stage of the evaluation," read a statement issued by Lola, which last attempted a F1 team in 1997.

Spurred by the FIA's plans for budget caps, the Huntingdon-based marque said it has commenced a "full technical, operational and financial evaluation" in view of developing a F1 car.

"The current necessity for formula one to adopt a responsible approach in times of economic uncertainty has created the ideal conditions for us to consider developing a car for the world championship," said executive chairman Martin Birrane.

That project was abandoned after one race, but Lola's history of involvement with the sport dates back to the early 1960s.

Currently, it produces prototype Le Mans sports cars.

Audi R8 LMS joins 24-Hour Nurburgring Race

Audi announced today that it will also join the Nurburgring 24-Hour Race with R8 LMS. The Audi R8 LMS will be raced by four different teams from ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing with two cars each.

This will not be the first race appearance for the R8 LMS, which took a podium spot in the BFGoodrich Endurance Championship. The 500 horsepower racers will also be used in a test race on May 2, where each of the 14 driving team members for ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing will get their turn behind the wheel. Audi also points out the street cred of these drivers, five of whom are factory drivers for the company. The fourteen pilots have more than a dozen first-place finishes, with five of the drivers having already one at least once at the Nürburgring 24 hour race.

Ultimate endurance test for new Audi R8 LMS

* GT3 sports car competes in Nürburgring 24-hour race
* Teams ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing with two cars each
* High-calibre driver line-ups featuring four DTM Champions

Ingolstadt - In the course of the further development of the Audi R8 LMS, an ultimate endurance test is on the agenda for the new GT3 sports car of AUDI AG at the end of May: On May 23/24, Teams ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing, with "factory" support by Audi, will field a total of four vehicles in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.

"The 24 Hours is not only one of the biggest motorsport events in Germany," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "The Nürburgring-Nordschleife is considered one of the world's toughest and most demanding race tracks. Similar to Sebring for the sports prototypes, it is superbly suited for revealing the final improvement potential of any new race car. This is exactly what we're planning to do at the 24-hour race before delivering the R8 LMS to customers, starting this fall."

The Audi R8 LMS delivering some 500 hp has so far completed two "test" races as part of the BFGoodrich Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and already clinched a podium result in the process. Another "test" race is planned for May 2. On that day, the 14 drivers scheduled to contest the 24-hour race will be at the wheel of the four vehicles.

Teams ABT Sportsline and Phoenix Racing managed to form high-calibre driver squads consisting of five current Audi "factory" drivers, four DTM Champions, four Le Mans winners and five drivers who have won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring at least once. All 14 drivers are regarded as outstanding endurance racers who are intimately familiar with the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

They include the reigning DTM Champion Timo Scheider, who - together with his DTM teammate Mattias Ekström and three-time Le Mans winner Marco Werner - will compete for Team ABT Sportsline. On the occasion of the Audi brand's 100th anniversary, their Audi R8 LMS will contest the event as car number 100. The second ABT Sportsline R8 will be driven by Christian Abt, Jean-François Hemroulle, Pierre Kaffer and Lucas Luhr.

Marc Basseng, Mike Rockenfeller and Frank Stippler will drive one of the two cars of Team Phoenix Racing. With the multiple Le Mans winners Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro and Hans-Joachim Stuck as well as Marcel Fässler at the wheel, the second R8 LMS fielded by Phoenix Racing has a particularly prominent cockpit crew.

With three overall victories under his belt so far, Hans-Joachim Stuck, who has been the Motorsport Representative of the Volkswagen Group since January 2008, is one of most successful drivers of the 24-hour race. Lucas Luhr, Emanuele Pirro, Timo Scheider and Mike Rockenfeller have entered their names on the winners' list of the endurance classic as well.

Also Team Phoenix Racing has already won the Nürburgring 24 hours. It triumphed at its home race in the Eifel region in 2003. The best result (second place) achieved by ABT Sportsline so far dates back to 2003 as well.

The 37th edition of the ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race will start on Saturday, May 23, at 4 p.m. (local time). Practice sessions will be held on Thursday and Friday. The sports channel DSF will air extensive live coverage from the Nürburgring.

The Audi teams at the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring:

Audi R8 LMS #97 (ABT Sportsline)
Christian Abt (D)
Jean-François Hemroulle (B)
Pierre Kaffer (D)
Lucas Luhr (D)

Audi R8 LMS #98 (Phoenix Racing)

SPOILER ALERT: ALMS at Long Beach

The grid seemed a bit bare at the Long beach ALMS race with the Audi and Porsche prototypes missing from the field, but there was still plenty to look forward to for the third race of the 2009 season.

For starters, spectators were treated to the final GT1 appearance of the Corvette C6.R in the United States. After competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, Corvette Racing will retire the GT1 cars, ending what will be remembered as a dominant era in motorsports. Corvetter Racing will return in August to take on the highly-competitive GT2 field. Porsche, BMW, Panoz and the rest will surely be ready for them, but in the meantime, the Vette drivers focused on treating everyone to a fierce battle here in Long Beach. Follow the jump to find out whether the Highcroft Racing Acura could make it two in a row, how the Corvettes ended their historic run, and if anyone could topple the pole-sitting Ferrari in GT2.

VW Returns to Nürburgring with Scirocco GT24-CNG

At the 24-Hour Race on the Nürburgring on 23/24 May, Volkswagen will field two Scirocco cars with innovative natural gas engines. Following the historic one-two victory at the Dakar Rally in January, which Volkswagen won as the first automobile manufacturer using diesel technology in the event, the Wolfsburg brand is now taking on another technical challenge – the use of EcoFuel engines in the endurance test twice around the clock on the world’s most demanding race track.

The two Scirocco GT24-CNG 2.0-litre turbo engines powered by natural gas deliver nearly 300 hp. In addition, the “factory” team will field three further Scirocco GT24 cars powered by 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines in the classic endurance race at the “Green Hell” in the Eifel region in Western Germany.

Last year, Volkswagen clinched a one-two victory in the 2.0-litre turbo class even before the Scirocco’s market launch.

“The 24-Hour Race offers Volkswagen an exciting stage to demonstrate its technical capabilities and expertise,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The Scirocco GT24 already proved its strengths as a dynamic sports coupe by clinching class victory in its debut race last year. In 2009, we are taking yet another step forwards by using two different engine concepts. We want to prove that Volkswagen offers different powertrain concepts, all of which excel in terms of high efficiency, dynamics and reliability. The Nordschleife and the 24-Hour Race provide an ideal test bed for this purpose.”

Red Bull Racing: A closer look at Rhys Millen's Hyundai Genesis Coupe

PRESS RELEASE:

With enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the upcoming launch of the 2010 Genesis Coupe, Hyundai is adding to the excitement by teaming with Rhys Millen Racing and Red Bull Energy Drink to campaign the car in the high-energy sport of drift racing this year.

At the Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled its motorsports program in the U.S. with the help of drift champion Rhys Millen, who will fabricate and race a 550-horsepower Genesis Coupe in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship and at select Redline Time Attack series events in 2009.

"Today's announcement puts the Genesis Coupe into three great motorsports series," said John Krafcik, acting president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. "We like to refer to the Genesis Coupe as the sinister sibling to the North American Car of the Year, the Genesis sedan and we look forward to Rhys harnessing every ounce of energy in the Coupe as he campaigns it."

Millen and his team are an ideal match to launch Hyundai's racing efforts. Millen's driving credentials include movie stunts, multiple drifting championships, a Pikes Peak world record and his recent New Year's Eve Las Vegas truck flip. But behind Millen's success in the driver's seat is a full team of engineers and fabricators that know how to maximize the potential of a race car.

Millen had his first opportunity to test drive the Genesis Coupe's performance credentials when he performed precision driving for the car's debut advertising campaign. Millen flogged a Genesis Coupe for three days during the filming process at Road Atlanta racetrack, and the car never missed a beat.

"The Genesis Coupe Concept inspired me to seek out a relationship with Hyundai and it has developed into multiple projects," said Millen, professional race driver and founder of RMR. "The immediate focus is developing the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe into a drift car with a 550-horsepower engine and a lightweight, rigid chassis. We are applying everything we know about fabricating into building this car."

THE CHASSIS BUILD

Six RMR employees have already stripped a Genesis Coupe to bare metal and the chassis has spent five days in an Alkali bath removing all rubber and adhesives. The chassis has also been stitch welded for added structural rigidity.

CARBON FIBER BODY PANELS

Millen quickly decided to take the already light weight Genesis Coupe and make it even lighter. His crew will take the molds used to build the "Art of Speed" SEMA car to once again replicate the Genesis Coupe's body out of carbon fiber. The hood, deck lid, roof, doors, fenders, front fascia and side skirts are all built out of carbon fiber. The carbon fiber panels range from 50 percent to 80 percent lighter than the sheet metal they replaced. For example, a factory Hyundai Genesis Coupe door weighs 68 pounds but modifications made by RMR reduce the door weight to just 8.5 pounds. This weight-saving approach is carried throughout the car without compromising its powerful curves, surface detail and "Z" bodyside line.

The side skirts have functional flat rocker panels with ducts to pull air out from underneath the car. A functional splitter on the front fascia and a built-in diffuser create pressure without drag. A rear diffuser with long tunnels keeps the air moving underneath the car. Downforce has been further increased by an APR GTC-500 rear wing that is fully adjustable and was designed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The hood is vented to dissipate heat and Aerocatch hood latches are used for safety.

The rear widebody fenders are also made out of carbon fiber and blend seamlessly into the vehicle design with a creative painting concept. The goal curb for the car is 2,400 pounds.

INTERIOR

The interior of the RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe is unrecognizable from its origins as a well-appointed 2+2 coupe designed with everyday driving in mind. All comfort and convenience features are removed to make way for a custom-fabricated eight-point safety cage and firewall which reinforce the Genesis Coupe's already stiff chassis. By removing the roof, the RMR fabricators welded every aspect of the safety cage to the frame of the car. The braces on the A and B pillars also tie into the strength of the body. The safety cage is required for racing and a single Sparco racing seat further protects the driver in the overhauled cockpit.

SUSPENSION

The RMR Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe utilizes a KW remote reservoir three-way adjustable coilover suspension. Adjustable chro-moly sway bars dial the suspension in further for true track performance. RMR also fabricated adjustable lower control arms, rear control arms and toe links to allow precise tuning of the chassis.

ENGINE AND TURBO KIT

The Hyundai Lambda 3.8-liter V6 engine, which comes standard on the Genesis Coupe 3.8, will be stroked to 4.1-liters and further enhanced by a Turbonetics turbocharger. An AEM engine management system will also be used. The engine will be mated to a HKS sequential transmission. The end result is a Genesis Coupe that will produce 550 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque.

WHEELS, TIRES AND BRAKES

To ensure that the enhanced power plant translates all the way to road performance, RMR added 18- by 8.5-inch front and 18- by 9.5-inch rear Enkei RPF1 light weight wheels and 225/40-18 Toyo Proxes R1R front tires and 265/40 Toyo Proxes R1R rear tires.

PAINT SCHEME

The paint scheme is a combination of blue, silver and unpainted black carbon fiber with its signature weave pattern.

Maserati GranTurismo MC Revealed

Maserati will officially unveil its new GranTurismo MC during the FIA GT's "Media Days." Now the car that was merely a concept back in September could be coming to a race track near you.

The GranTurismo MC racer is based on the GranTurismo S road car. Its production stats are similar to the concept shown at the 2008 Paris auto show. It weighs less than 3090 lbs thanks to a fully-stripped interior, Lexan windows, a carbon fiber dashboard, and multiple composite body panels. Maserati didn't specify the horsepower, but if the GranTurismo MC has the same 450-hp engine as the concept, it will boast a racecar-like power-to-weight ratio of 7 lb / hp.

A Wolf in Wolf's Clothing: New Corvette GT2 racer takes cues from ZR1

For 2009, the Corvette C6.R GT2 will take its cues from the new king of the roadgoing Corvette castle, the all-conquering ZR1. Don't expect a window into the race-engine compartment, but the design promises to look unmistakably like a track-bound version of the supercharged 'Vette flagship. Under the hood in 2009 will be a downsized 6.0-liter LS7 to meet the new ALMS regulations, to be replaced by a 5.5-liter race-tuned LS3 with 500 horsepower for 2010. The rendering above gives us a good idea of what the C6.R GT2 will look like, so F430 and 911 pilots had better get used to it.

Victory can get boring after a while. The first couple of times Corvette Racing took the GT1 title in the American Le Mans Series, it must have been exciting. But after dominating the class every year since 2001, they're starting to look for a new fight, and the Porsches and Ferraris duking it out in GT2 must have started to look mighty tasty. Aching for a fight, Chevrolet's racing partner Pratt & Miller have started teasing what their latest challenger will look like, and it's pretty badass.

Drifting 101 with world champion Rhys Millen

Hyundai has set up a new YouTube channel where it's going to be posting videos featuring its cars. The first couple of clips come from the Genesis coupe press intro that just took place in Nevada. You can read Mike Harley's report on that later this week. In the meantime, check out drifting champion Rhys Millen explaining how drifting competitions are judged and what sort of changes his team had to make to Genesis to turn it into a drift car. Warning: if screeching tires, shredded rubber and lots of smoke make you squeamish, you might want to avoid this. Otherwise, enjoy Rhys Millen's Drifting 101 after the jump.

Most Successful Porsche Race Cars Reunite at 12 Hours of Sebring

Porsche's successes at the 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida are on display for all to see. The German automaker is the most successful competitor at the race after covering 18 overall wins and 65 class wins.

In this special group photo the cars featured are a 718 RS 60, and RS Spyder, the 935 and a 962. Each of these has contributed to Porsche's achievements on that event. The 718 RS 60 took Porsche's first overall win at the race in 1960 under the guidance of Hans Herrmann from Germany and the Belgian by the name of Olivier Gendebien. At the time the 718 RS 60 was a compact, lightweight racer with a 160hp 1.6-litre engine. Thanks to its exploits of beating bigger more powerful cars it earned the nickname "Giant Killer."

Immediately after the 935 came the 962 which plotted four wins in a row beginning with the unit driven by American A.J. Foyt Jr and Frenchman Bob Wollek. The car's 2.85-litre turbo motor produced 680hp (500kW).

The 2008 RS Spyder recorded Porsche's latest win, twenty years after the 962. It was led by the team of Timo Bernhard (German), Romain Dumas (French) and Emmanuel Collard (French). Even though it was competing in the LMP2 category it beat all the other cars in the faster LMP1 because of reliability and fuel consumption. The RS Spyder's less powerful 478hp (352kW) 3.4-litre V8 engine did not seem to hamper it. It was 200hp (147kW) less potent than rivals.

The Porsche 935 was a formidable force in Sebring between 1978 and 1984. Power came from a 2.85-litre 6-cylinder turbo engine making 590hp (434kW). It ran circles around rivals on the track seven times in a row and became a racing legend in the process. Interestingly no one driver drove the car for more than one season during those seven glorious years.

Brawn stuns F1 by smashing pole record

Even the cynics were astonished when Jenson Button cut the timing beam on the Circuit de Catalunya pit straight on Wednesday.

Low fuel run to impress potential sponsors or not, the Brawn GP had circulated the Barcelona layout in an unofficial 1:19.1.

Last April for the Spanish Grand Prix at the same venue, Robert Kubica's BMW was the fastest car in the low-fuel Q2 phase - a 1min20.5.
